and what is *that* supposed to mean?

30 12 2005

Have you ever had someone say something to you and you weren’t sure if it was a harmless comment or if they were being a dick? Yesterday afternoon the old guy in the office next to mine was leaving for the weekend and asked if I had any plans for New Year’s Eve, and told me that whatever I did, try to stay a little sober. “Ha, I’ll do my best,” is pretty much how I replied, and I didn’t think anything of it until this morning. We had our office Christmas party a couple weeks ago, and my boss told me Monday morning that he’d heard I had been a little “disoriented” by the time I left. Now I had had three beers, but I was there for like four hours and had had a huge meal, so I was perfectly okay to drive. So I find myself wondering if Old Man River was just assuming that because I’m in my mid-twenties that I would be out drinking, or if he had also heard I was a little tipsy from the party and was making a crack. I guess I’d have to ask him to find out, and I might have to jump his shit if his response was unsatisfactory, so I’ll just let it go this time.

i think it was one of those generic comments that older people say to younger people to appear relatable. Of course if you go to back to work and all your co-workers are in your cubicle for an intervention, you’ll know my opinion was way off the mark.

Nah–that old guy’s been a pain since day one. My advice is confront him, and then when he least expects it, stab him with a fork. Maybe next time he won’t be so quick to criticize.

I’ve had that “and what’s THAT supposed to mean?” stuff happen alot while working at offices. I think that there’s this general fear created in the workplace that prevents people from coming out and saying what they mean to say so they devise other ways to say it thus making it all kind of confusing. Sometimes that’s not the case. I had this one lady say “you must be Jewish”. Huh? “Well, you have black hair and Jews have black hair.” WTF? I wasn’t really insulted by the comment as much as I felt assaulted by her stupidity. I don’t know why but out of the hundreds of people I have gotten to know over the years at various jobs I have only worked with a handful that I have really gotten to know well and respect. The rest seemed like they were hired because there was some unwritten quota that required the various places to have retards on staff.

Weeelll, I had a cop who pulled me and a couple friends over one night ask if I was a stripper because one person I was with was a stripper (male). Oh and this was because I hadn’t signaled when I turned. And I had on sandals and a tank top and jeans, which is, and I didn’t know this, very characteristic of a stripper. I mean, I thought they were just standard clothes. Talk about offensive, I worked at the Children’s Center at the time and was still in high school. As mad as I was I couldn’t really say much but “No sir, I’m a nursing assistant”.

SO rude…
