“the oc” disorder
16 02 2006I think I’m pretty far from anything resembling diagnosable OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), but like most people, I have my fair share of quirky habits and routines. So I thought I’d share them with the group, and maybe you can take the opportunity to share yours as well so I feel a little less nutty.
- If I have to carry my keys, wallet, and cell phone in my pants pockets, I have a specific pocket that they have to go in (determined by the pocket arrangement of said pants/short) with no exceptions. I also have to touch the outside of each pocket semi-frequently to make sure everything is still in there. As if someone would be able to reach in my front pants pocket and take my keys without me noticing
- When in traffic, I always look at the license plate of the car in front of me and add up the digits in my head to see if they come to a multiple of ten. I do the same thing with phone numbers on billboards or other groupings of numbers. I’m not sure why, as I immediately disregard the results.
- When I’m eating something, I do so in such a manner as to provide me with the “best” possible last bite. For instance, if I am going to eat a cheeseburger, I’ll look at it to see which part seems to look the most appetizing. I’ll then start to eat on the far edge of the sandwich so that I can finish with the “good” part.
If I come up with anymore, I will be sure to amend the list.
Late addition:
- When I’m doing a check run at work to pay our vendors, I have a certain routine I’ve perfect for signing, copying, folding, etc. all of the checks, so that by the time I’ve got them in envelopes and ready to mail, they remain in alphabetical order. If one check has to get set aside because there’s a problem with it, I general stick it back in the stack alphabetically before putting it in the mailbox. Again, I don’t know why I do this, since they’re going all different places anyway.

You are weird. But I’m pretty sure everyone has little habits like that. I know I do. I can’t think of any now, but I am so anal, I probably have too many to remember. Just ask Mike.
I remembered one. Everything has to be symmetrical and straight…crooked pictures and things drive me insane!
yay! you are a freak like me! the food thing is something i do. besides all the other insane ocd stuff i do like putting stuff away and getting very upset when things aren’t in their correct places!
When eating things like M&Ms or Skittles - I first arrange them by color, and make sure i eat the ones that make them uneven numerically and when there are the same number of each color I proceed to eat them in a manner to keep them that way.
I have seen my nephew do the exact same thing -
I am a constant lock checker -
I have MANY more OCDs I do, but no one really needs to know how CRAZY I really am…
Sarah…I do relatively the same with skittles…they have to be an even number of each color.
I am also a lock-checker. If I lay down at night and have the slightest bit uneasiness that I may not have locked the door, even if I can remember doing it, I will get back up and go check.
When I eat chips, I try to find the most colorful ones in the bag; for example if they are BBQ, I have to find the orangest chips, they have the most flavor.
I am a germophobe; I will not sit on the seat in public restrooms. EVER. I will take my papertowel with me to reopen the door so I’m not forced to touch the handle again, and if I get so much as anything on my hands, something wet, something invisible, doesn’t matter, if it’s there it HAS to get washed off.
Damn maybe I actually have OCD…but to be fair the hand things my sister does too. I think it’s from working in nursing homes…you just never know what actually ended up on your hands.
