i’m sure there’s a moral to this story, but i don’t care enough to look for it

This fairly young guy just came into my building asking if I knew where the Napa Distribution Center is. I didn’t, but I looked up the address and printed directions for him. He asked if we were hiring, and I gave him an application, which he decided to fill out in the lobby. He turned it in, thanked me for the directions, and went on his merry way.

I just glanced at it while moving some papers around on my desk and saw the words “battery explainin person” written in one blank. I figured since he was going to Napa that he must have sold car batteries at one of their stores and used that ridiculous bit of text as his job description. Not very impressive, guy.

Then I looked at the question he was responding to.

Have you been convicted of a felony within the last 7 yrs? *the Yes box was checked*
If Yes, please explain: battery, explain in person

Now I sort of feel like a jerk for laughing.

Probably best you laughed AFTER he left…so he didn’t clock you in the face…and could then add assault to the battery charges. Yikes. People just scare me.

That is absolutely comical.

That reminds me of a guy I met at a truck show last year, he came by our booth and asked me if we would hire someone with a felony or misdemeanor. Our policy is we can, but it has to be a minor misdemeanor and it has to be fairly old (I use my own discretion on how old and severity as to whether or not I will hire them) and we can’t take felonies. My reply was “Maybe, what was the charge and how long ago?”
To which he replies”Well is was back in ‘80, it’s a felony manlsaughter charge but I SWEAR it was self defense…”
Evidently he couldn’t prove that to a jury of his peers so I had to say no.
People are crazy

Aww man, for a second there I was sure I had found my true calling as a “battery explainin person”. Way to ruin it for me…..

Oh! I wonder how much a “battery explainin person” would make? HA!

Too funny. It must suck having something like that hanging over your head.

At my last job, I helped to interview and hire people for a home health care company. We hired this male caregiver to take care of elderly and disabled people in their homes. He looked a little unkempt with long hair and was usually unshaven but we gave him a chance. He did a great job with clients and was a very hard worker. He also worked at a nursing home and they gave him a good recommendation. I had one family, however, that complained and said they never wanted him to come back because “he looked like a child molester.” They said they were just uncomfortable around him. He had no criminal record or anything and I thought they were just being weird. I don’t work there anymore and about 6 months ago, I was told he left the company to work somewhere else. About 3 months ago, he was arrested for molesting 3 young children and is currently awaiting trial. I always thought I was a pretty good judge of character with our workers..but that one threw me off.
